The Skill competition at Tradex in Abbotsford
In 1994 the BC Skills set the path to encourage the youth to excel in the trade and technological sectors. For the past 2 decades, BC Skills has fostered thousands of youth, igniting their interests and talents through various competitions that are held across our province. Skills Canada realizes that by investing in our youth’s understanding and comprehension in these sectors, we are creating a stronger technological foundation in our province. The BC government has also been a strong supporter of the event by providing $100,00 through the Industry Training authority (ITA). The ITA has also donated an additional $150,000 to BC Skills.

The BC Skills Women Mentoring Program
Being held in conjunction with the Tradex competition in Abbotsford, this is a wonderful initiative from BC Skills. It allows female students from grades 9-12 to partner with other female experts in a variety of disciplines that are being represented at the skills competition. Some of the featured areas of interest include woodwork, plumbing, engineering, electrical and more.
How many Competitors will be attending this Abbotsford event?
The provincial competition is extremely popular with the schools, and over 5000 experts, students, educators, government officials, and labor leaders in attendance. Students from grade 6 – post-secondary will battle in 58 competition stations such as animation, automotive, baking, welding, robotics, and much more.

Everyone really benefits from these trade competitions that occur on a regional, provincial and world level. As students win their respective regional divisions, they advance to the provincial and eventually world levels. The focus is not only on winning. The idea is to encourage the youth to work in teams, to build friendships and to promote excellence their area of talent.

By watching these competitions, the youth in attendance can gain real insight into what areas may be of interest to them. The trade skills that are being showcased are relevant to what current employees are looking for. There are also leading experts in a variety of disciplines that are available to speak to the spectators about any questions that they may have. In addition, there are several “Try a skill opportunity” – Where the participants can experience a hands on demonstrations that may spark an interest or passion in a particular area of interest.
