Abbotsford International Airport History
The airport was constructed in the 1940’s by the Royal Canadian Airforce. It was used as a training school for several years, and after World War II the Abbotsford International Airport was used as a secondary airport in BC. Before the use of Instrumental system, fog made flying conditions very dangerous in Vancouver and Abbotsford was the perfect location to land the planes with ease.
One of Abbotsford’s most celebrated events premiered in 1962. The Abbotsford Air show’s first show took place during the second week of August and has continued to be a popular family event over the years. The show has been listed as one of the top 10 airshows in the world and attracts flying enthusiasts from all over North America.
In the late 1960’s Conair aviation was incorporated and found their new home at the Abbotsford International Airport.
The fall of September 1984 was a historical highlight for the Abbotsford International Airport when Pope John Paul II visited BC for the first time and was greeted by an emotional crowd of over 200,000 people.
The late 1990’s saw the ownership of the Airport move to the City of Abbotsford from the Department of Transportation and also saw Westjet take its first flight. In 1997 YXX became a jet passenger airport with flights to Alberta.
In 2007 the Abbotsford International Airport celebrated a 65 years anniversary of when the first plane landed at YXX.
